Celtic folklore, Welsh and Manx
Published in Unknown Binding by Gordon Press ()
Author: John Rhys
Average review score:

A Book of Impressive Scholarship
Celtic Folklore : Welsh and Manx is one of those beautifully written books that makes you grateful: grateful that an author of such brilliance devoted his energy to a topic of interest to you; grateful that an accomplished scholar was able, in the last quarter of the nineteenth century to interview old Welsh and Manx folk whose recollections reached back to the period prior to 1825, and who recalled the stories of their own grandparents, thus bringing us a view of folkways now over 200 years old;and finally, grateful that this wonderful book is still in print. Sir John was Professor of Celtic and Principal of Jesus College, Oxford, at the turn of the century. He lived at just the right time, and I think I can say the the world he wrote of is very nearly gone now. At the period when he did his field work very evident remains of the pre-Christian past were discernable, and these he records in wonderful detail. Snap up a copy of Celtic Folklore : Welsh and Manx while you can.

A Book well expected
"Under the guidance of the queen mother, most of the royal family, accepted the grand truths of the burgeoning religion. The stranger who opened her eyes to the new vision of eternity in the in the midst of time vanished as he had come , leaving seeds of goodness in his wake. Now the queen mother offered those seeds to her new friends. They were a far cry from the dark powers of the invisible of the druids and the mysteries of the invisible regions. There was no need for dolmens and lunar cycles to make contact with the beyound." This paragraph is from the paper back edition page 174.

Later edition available
A later edition of this book was published in 1994. The later edition has been broken down into 3 volumes by Oakwood Press. The 1994 edition has been rewritten with new material added that takes the history of the railway up to 1993. The later edition has also been broken down in to a diary of year by year account of significant events that have shaped the railway. Both the 1974 and the 1994 editions are very good reads and contain different texts there are some photographs that are common to both editions, and a good number that are unique to each publication

This book has been a great influence on my life
This book, along with Keith Brockie's Wildlife Sketchbook, have been a great influence on my life. The drawings and text obviously reveal a deep love and knowledge of Scotland's flora and fauna. I began doing art again after reading these books. Anybody with a love for Nature-as it really is and not some romantisized version-will love these books too.

very informative not the same old stuff you see everywhere
I really enjoyed this book. It has the most extensive list of Celtic baby names that I have come across. The definitions help give you some background information on each name. The top baby name book I have com e across!!

I found this book facinating
I found the book very useful while helping my daughter choose a name for her son, The name she eventually chose was Rhys,a very ancient and royal name bore by Welsh Celtic Kings.

Hands down, the best book on authentic Celtic names!
Excellent resource! Has the orginal spellings and pronunciations. We used it for both our kids.
